A baby boy was born in California with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot! The baby has a condition called “polydactyly” — a genetic trait that causes the appearance of extra fingers and toes.

Wacky Product Alert: Robotic Baby Crib

The Suima crib, developed at Kyuushuu University in Japan, is designed to rock your baby to sleep if it wakes up crying. It does this by sensing cries using a microphone. When detected, the crib starts to sway side to side every 1.8 seconds, or about as fast as a parent’s heartbeat.

Apparently, this speed helps lull the infant back to sleep quickly. The video below proves it.

The crib is available for rent in Japan for about $100 per month, or you could buy one for between $4,500 and $5,500.

‘Today Show’ Family Expands

Today Show co-host Natalie Morales gave birth to Luke Morales-Rhodes yesterday and was announced on the morning program today. He was born a week early and weighed in 7 lbs., 4 oz. He is the second child for the 36-year-old Morales and her husband of 10 years, investment consultant Joe Rhodes. Their firstborn, Josh, is 4.

Dog Drama: Getting Ready for a REAL Baby

A lot of parents are now paying to baby-proof their dogs. A canine re-education course called Dogs & Storks, launched in 2006, now has 35 affiliated trainers in the U.S. and Canada, with hundreds of graduates.

“It’s catching on because people are choosing to have kids later, and their dogs are really their first baby,” says the course’s creator, Jennifer Shryock of Cary, N.C., who sells it to trainers for $300.

Dogs bite about 4.7 million people a year in the U.S., the majority of them children, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Bonnie Beaver, a Texas vet and past president of the group, says that of the 15 to 20 people a year who die from dog bites, about 80% are children.

Ms. Shryock tells expectant parents, “When the baby comes, you are going to look at your dog for the first time as an animal. You will feel different about Fluffy.”
