Joshua and Anna Duggar – from TLC’s “18 Kids and Counting” — welcomed daughter Mackynzie Renee Duggar on Thursday, according to People.

The newest Duggar was born at Joshua and Anna’s home, with a midwife and doula assisting in the birth. Although she is the first child for the young couple, both 21, she certainly has a lot of family who were anxious to meet her, with 17 aunts and uncles in the Duggar clan.

In fact, the brood is about to grown again in 2010, as Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are expecting their 19th child in the spring.

Recent studies show that TV-viewing tends to decrease babies’ likelihood of learning new words, talking, playing and otherwise interacting with others. A new study published Monday in the Archive of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine adds to that evidence while introducing an intriguing new perspective. Many studies have suggested that television impedes learning by inhibiting youngsters’ ability to interact with others, and according to Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a University of Washington pediatrician, that effect may be compounded when parents get drawn into TV-watching too.

The unexplained baby boom left nurses swamped last week. The huge number of arrivals filled every one of the birthing center’s 60 beds — forcing Maimonides Medical Center to rush in off-duty staff and open an extra medical wing to deal with the overflow.

Now it appears Louisville, Kentucky wants in on the action.

Babies delivered by elective, repeat cesarean section delivery are nearly twice as likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) than those born vaginally after the mother has previously had a c-section, the study finds.

When one mother discovered, at 24 weeks pregnant, that she had a malignant brain tumor, she was faced with an unthinkable choice: treat her cancer and lose the baby, or wait until the baby could live on her own and risk her own life.

In a stunning act of devotion to her baby, she chose to delay treatment until she knew the baby was strong enough to live outside the womb. A recent Los Angeles Times essay recounts her harrowing tale.

Doctors told the mother, a young Indian woman in her 20s, that if she didn’t treat the aggressive tumor immediately, she would likely die. But the fetus would probably not survive treatment. She decided to delay treatment and slipped into a coma within days.
